Choosing the right tool

Which sensory tool should I choose?

Start by noticing where and how the need for fidgeting or sensory stimulation appears. If it comes through the mouth or teeth — chewing collars, sleeves, pencils, gum, or constant snacking — choose chewelry. If it appears while writing, or during work or academic tasks, choose a pen tip-topper. If it is the hands — tapping, picking, restlessness — choose a stress ball.

What is the difference between a chew necklace and a pen topper?

A chew necklace is worn, so it is always within reach — useful when the need for oral or tactile input is constant. A pen topper slides onto a pencil and is designed to be chewed during writing tasks, in class and at homework time.

My child chews through everything. What is strong enough?

We offer a range of oral input and chewable tools at different firmness levels. The Dragon Chew-Amulet is the firmest option in our chewelry range, made in textured food-grade silicone for strong chewers. In the pen topper collection, the Robot Pen Tip-Topper is the firmest. For medium firmness, choose the Pastel Rainbow Chewable Necklace or Rainbow Chewable Bracelet; for a softer option, the Feather Chew-Amulet. Replace any chewable that has been bitten through.

Are there discreet sensory tools for teenagers and adults?

Yes. The Feather Chew-Amulet and Pastel Rainbow Chewable Necklace read as jewellery and suit any outfit. Our stress balls are silent, so they work in exams, lectures and open-plan offices.

Are these tools only for children?

No. Sensory needs do not stop at a particular age. Our tools are used by children, teenagers and adults — for focus at work, stress relief, sensory input and self-regulation.

Safety and materials

Are chew necklaces safe to chew?

Our chewables are made from food-grade silicone, BPA-free and latex-free, certified to LFGB, CPSIA and EC 1935/2004 for materials in contact with food. Supervise younger children, and replace any piece showing tears or bite-through.

What are the stress balls made of?

TPR, a soft thermoplastic rubber. They are latex-free, non-toxic, waterproof and washable with warm water and mild soap.

How do I clean a sensory tool?

Warm water and mild soap, then air dry. Wash regularly, as with anything used daily.

How long does a chewable last?

Months of daily use for most people. Strong chewers go through them faster, which is normal rather than a fault. Replace any piece that has been chewed through.

The science

Why does my child chew on shirts, collars and pencils?

Chewing is oral sensory input, and the nervous system uses it to regulate arousal and attention. It is a need rather than misbehaviour. Read the full explanation.

Do fidget tools actually help with focus?

For people who seek sensory input, low-demand movement can support sustained attention rather than compete with it. The effect depends on the person and the tool. Read the research.

Are sensory tools useful for ADHD or autism?

Many people with ADHD or autism seek sensory input to regulate their emotions and behaviour. Sensory tools support focus, self-regulation and stress management, which is why occupational therapists and psychomotor therapists often include them in a sensory diet. They are support tools, not a treatment, and they are equally used by people with no diagnosis at all.

What makes Synaptoys different from a generic fidget toy?

Each tool is chosen for a specific sensory profile — firmness, texture, resistance, and whether the input is oral, tactile or visual — rather than for novelty. Every product page explains which need it answers. Our range is created by a neuroscientist with extended clinical experience in Dubai, with the aim of answering a wide range of needs, and every item is tested in clinical settings with patients who have sensory needs before it enters the catalogue.

Schools, clinics and bulk orders

Do you supply schools, clinics and therapy centres in the UAE?

Yes. We supply schools, nurseries, therapy centres and clinics across the UAE, and can advise on a mix of tools for a sensory corner or classroom. Write to hello@synaptoys.com with what you need.

Can a teacher allow a sensory tool in class?

Our tools are silent in use, which is usually the deciding factor. Pen toppers and chewelry are the least visible options — one sits on a pencil and looks like stationery, the other is simply worn as jewellery.

Can I get advice before ordering?

Yes. Write to hello@synaptoys.com describing the situation — age, what you have noticed, where it happens — and we will tell you which tool fits, or tell you honestly if none of ours does.
